World Water Day 2012 in Room 1122

World Water Day coincided with the end of our unit of inquiry into water. The students have been comparing water use between Canada and a community on Zambia. The activity we did today allowed them to imagine themselves as a family in Edmonton, Calgary, Uganda or China. In groups of 3, they followed a set of task cards that simulated the water use by a different family. Students recorded the water use for their group as well as observations.

"We noticed that we used a lot of water. It took a lot of work and a lot of water to do all the things on the cards." (Abegale, Lanesha & Braidi)

"We used the waste bin 5 times." (Liam, Ivy & Tasia)

""We used 11 cups of water to wash clothes."

As a follow-up activity, the students recorded their future actions to protect water:

"My action is to tell others to keep water clean and sparkling". (Braidi)
"My action is to only biodegradeable stuff down the drain." (Noah)
"My action is to not keep water on when I brush my teeth." (Liam)
