The butterflies have arrived! There was much excitement on Friday morning when the first butterfly emerged from its chrysalis.

Take a look at the chrysalis on the top left side of the photograph. I had no idea that what was about to happen...

About 30 seconds after I took this photo, I looked back and the chrysalis had cracked open and the butterfly had just emerged. Its wings were all crumpled and it took about an hour for them to be fully pumped up and ready for flight.

“IT’S SPRING, IT’S SPRING!” exclaimed the butterfly. “Let’s go out and fly to flower to flower in the sky. Let’s all fly up trees and up plants, but be careful not to get too close to the frogs or you’ll be eaten. Come friends, come fly with me.”

“Remember when you were a caterpillar and you didn’t get eaten because you were hiding under the leaves from a sharp-eyed bird? We don’t do the same things as we used to because we have grown. You are supposed to do some things differently.”

“You need to find a tree and hang on to it. Do not move and do not fly, or else you’ll be eaten by the sharp-eyed bird.”

“OH NO! Here comes one now! Quick, find a tree. If you can’t find one, go to the field of tall wheat and go to the very bottom. Be very quiet; be very sneaky, you don’t want the bird to notice. So try to sneak and hide. Now, hide there. I am coming too. Let’s go let’s go!”

“The bird is gone is gone, let’s go and play. Look out for the praying mantises. That is one of your enemies.  If your enemy sees you, fly as high as you can. A praying mantis has no wings and it can’t fly but it is sneaky, so fly the whole time.”

“Don’t stop flying. If you’re tired just land on a sun flower because sunflowers are the tallest flowers and the mantises can’t reach the top. And if you don’t want to, you can always land on a tree.”
